LAJJA ("Shame") is a very controversial novel, has attracted attention and anger of locals i.e. Bangladeshi Muslims who were emotionally charged against the minority community (Hindus in this case) after the Babri Masjid demolition in Ayodhya . The Novel   by Tasleema Nasrin is a story of just seven days. This novel is mainly her protest against religious extremism , frenzy of localities , madness of directionless youth and communal violence overall.

Lajja” is all about anti Hindu riots against Babri masjid demolition, it captures the fear and "unremittingly dark" reality of communal riots. It’s about  a person who in spite of having life at threat believes that this is their country and they won’t leave whatever be the consequences are side  effects of disturbances in nearby country , it's about a young man  whose  sister was lifted from home  by youth involved in riots whom he couldn’t find in spite of his best efforts the authoress has successfully described feelings of a young helpless desperate man. It's the story of a helpless lady also with sick husband who also gets paralyzed during riots. Through all these characters the writer  has not only described the situation but also open up the reality of the country who always claimed to be a secular country.  While secularism was one of four fundamental principles of original 1972 constitution , many instances we have seen when it fluctuated between secularism and Islamic state identity.

Lajja, story begins after the intro of characters including the Dutta family, a Hindu minority who find themselves targets of violence during riots . in this family of four are Suranjan the young guy Sudhamoy his father, kironmyee his mother and his sister Maya . Suranjan and his father Sudhamoy were of the feal that person who desert their country are inhuman .

It has again and again been shown that how these people are surviving under such circumstances and the fiery anger of the majority, damaging Hindus props and Killing Hindu people as a revenge of Babri masjid demolition,

novel is all about,  how religion can drive people to forget  basic and basic relationship . It also explores the struggle of a minority community trying to prove their loyalty to a country that is turning against them. The authoress advocates for “humanism” as the true and only "religion" to prevent the humanity.

Authoress  has described in detail various incidents of looting, burning communalism , religion-based identity , spread in country after Babri Masjid demolition . Suranjan a common man is unable to understand the reasons behind all this massacre and violence for an incident of other nearby country .

The  authoress very clearly and boldly narrates that after independence and formation of Bangladesh, religion was used as a political weapon and a large number of people were forced to follow Islam which became the religion of the country unlawfully and unconstitutionally

She writes  about the victimization of Hindus in Bangladesh which started in 80s,  i.e. well before Babri Masjid demolition. She has listed many incidents of Hindu victimization with date and place by Muslim fundamentalist 1979 onward.

Though there is nothing new which is not heard or we don't know but even than I would suggest, it’s a must-read book which was banned shortly after release in Bangladesh and the authoress is still facing exile from her motherland

I will give it 6 out of 10 as खुली किताब rating
